Taiwan’s most beautiful region, Sun Moon Lake

    October 2, 2017

It’s said that one side of the lake resembles a sun, while the other side resembles a moon. I didn’t get a chance to see either, but the mist running along the sparkling water during the sunrise was enough to have me convinced: Sun Moon Lake is the most beautiful region in Taiwan.

Taiwan’s largest body of water, Sun Moon Lake, is just as pristine as it sounds. With glittering green water and lush mountains, everywhere you turn is just as beautiful as the next. As I sat on my balcony at 4:30 in the morning, eager to capture the cross over light, and wandered around at 5:30 in the morning, determined to fly my drone towards the sunrise, I fell more and more in love with this place.

Cross over light captured at 4:30 in the morning. Probably the one time that I thanked jet lag for keeping me awake!

My tour group and I met in the lobby at 8:00 a.m. to go on a bike ride around the lake. It was a beautiful leisure path, especially since most tourists weren’t awake yet.

The sunrise slowly waking up the mountains. I could barely even hear crickets when I was shooting this, but the silence and mystery of a new place was one of the most breathtaking experiences I’ve ever had while travelling.

What to do in Sun Moon Lake

With 15 different hiking trails and 5 different bike trails, Sun Moon Lake makes for the perfect wellness destination. The morning before we departed we rented a bike at 8:00 a.m. and set off on the Sun Moon Lake Bikeway – Xiangshan 3km trail. There were few tourists up at that time, allowing my tour group and I to indulge in everything the trail had to offer. It was the perfect trail to snap some great photos and fly my DJI Mavic Pro. Check out the video above to see how the drone footage looked!

Sun Moon Lake also offers a variety of boat tours, giving tourists a different perspective. They say that sun Moon Lake is referred to as ‘Lover’s Lake,’ a tribute to the countless couples that get married alongside the lake or take their honeymoon here. While on the boat tour we even saw people kayaking, an activity that reminded me of Jasper Park in Alberta.

The day before we departed we strolled along the Ita Thao shopping street, a street where you can find food stalls, mementos and iconic clothing unique to the tribes that first discovered Sun Moon Lake.

Feeling more like a dream than a reality, Sun Moon Lake is one place in Asia you won’t want to miss!

The busy strip where tourists pick up their mementos. I didn’t purchase anything, but I will be framing my photos!

Where to stay in Sun Moon Lake

Hotels like Fleur De Chine give tourists an incredible view of the lake—some rooms with a direct view average $1,000 per night! Though I didn’t stay in the most expensive room, I still had a beautiful view of the scenery. I also found the room to be quite large in comparison to European or NYC hotels. Fleur De Chine also has a variety of spa packages, a mist spring pool (naked pool, one for men and one for women), an an outdoor concourse for viewing.

This sweet guy just couldn’t help but pose for the camera. I snapped this while touring the Ita Thao shopping street.
